Not every older Calgary home has Poly-B — plenty have galvanized steel instead, especially homes built before Poly-B's 1978–1995 window. The two get mixed up constantly, but they look, feel, and fail completely differently. Here's how to tell which one you're actually looking at.
Two Different Eras, Two Different Materials
Galvanized steel pipe became the standard water supply material in North American homes around the 1940s and stayed common through the mid-20th century — homes built before roughly 1970 are the ones most likely to have it. Poly-B came later, commonly installed in Calgary homes built between about 1978 and 1995, before it was phased out. If your home falls outside that 1978–1995 window, especially if it's significantly older, galvanized is at least as likely a guess as Poly-B — and it's worth confirming which one you actually have before assuming.

Poly-B is flexible plastic that bends by hand. Galvanized is rigid steel — it won't flex, and it comes in straight sections, not coils.

Galvanized is steel, so a magnet sticks to it. Poly-B is plastic, so a magnet won't grab it at all.
Look at the joints
Galvanized sections screw together with threaded metal fittings. Poly-B uses crimp rings and plastic fittings — no threads.
Colour is a rougher clue but still useful: galvanized typically looks dull silver-grey metal, sometimes with rust-coloured staining at the joints over time, while Poly-B is a dull grey, black, or cream-coloured plastic. Why They Fail Completely Differently
Galvanized pipe fails through corrosion. The zinc coating that protects the steel wears away over time, and rust builds up on the inside of the pipe — this narrows the internal opening, which is why homes with galvanized supply lines often notice gradually weakening water pressure years before an actual leak shows up. Eventually corrosion can eat all the way through the pipe wall, causing a pinhole leak, or discolour your water a rusty orange or brown. A typical lifespan is often cited around 20 years, with significant deterioration common by 30 to 40.
Poly-B doesn't rust — it's plastic, so internal corrosion and the pressure loss that comes with it simply aren't part of its failure pattern.
